Last night I spoke to parents and educators at the Education forum hosted by the three Yellowknife School Boards. Today I visited N.J. Macpherson school and learned from the experience of students and teachers.
Education is the key to correcting many of the serious social issues here in the NWT and a way that we can support the advancement of Northerners in both public and private sector employment. Our students are the next generation of workers, parents and leaders in our communities.
I was raised in Yellowknife and went to school here, attending Mildred Hall, J.H. Sissons, William MacDonald and Sir John Franklin schools. My son, Corbin, is currently enrolled at J.H. Sissons in the French immersion program. It was a privilege to receive my education in the North and I understand firsthand how important it is to support our education system.
As your MLA, I will be a strong advocate for ensuring that schools receive funding that is fair and supports the needs of our students. I will fight hard for new post-secondary opportunities through advancing my plan for a Northern polytechnic and new campus in Yellowknife. I will oppose any new initiatives that take away from existing education funding and programs.
I will ensure the future of our students with a real plan that works for them.
